Tibet or Mongolia - Lot 279
Tibet or Mongolia Probably 19th - early 20th century Rare painting on silk mounted on a frame depicting a lama or Buddhist dignitary Depicting a Buddhist master dressed in a rich monastic robe embroidered with gold motifs. He is seated in meditative posture on a colorful cushion, holding a dharmachakra (Dharma wheel), symbolizing the Buddha's teachings. His expressive, finely detailed face and characteristic yellow headdress suggest a representation of a master of the Gelugpa school, perhaps a Panchen Lama or a Jebtsundamba Khutuktu from Mongolia. The background is neutral, highlighting the finesse of the line and the elegance of the colors. This work illustrates the influence of traditional Tibetan thangkas, although mounted on Western-style stretchers. It bears witness to the refinement of Buddhist painting and the veneration accorded to spiritual masters in the Tibetan and Mongolian worlds. Presented in a gilded wood frame decorated with foliage and floral motifs. Unframed: 62 x 81 cm With frame: 78 x 97 cm Some wear marks visible on the fabric, including traces of moisture and folding, a tear on the left-hand side. Period frame with visible wear and tear. The silk was formerly marouflaged on canvas mounted on a stretcher. "This painting shows stylistic similarities with a portrait of the Qianlong emperor featured on a thangka dated from the 18th century. However, after examination, we consider it to be a decorative work made in the twentieth century, inspired by this historical model." Provenance : European private collection
