Anton GOUBAU (Antwerp, 1616 - 1698) - Lot 227
Anton GOUBAU (Antwerp, 1616 - 1698) Scene of an imaginary Mediterranean port animated by ships Oil on canvas (scratches and minor damage) 118 x 169 cm Signed lower left A.B Goubau F. Anton Goubau (1616-1698) was a Flemish Baroque painter from Antwerp, best known for his lively genre scenes and idealized depictions of antiquity. Although trained in the Flemish tradition, his trip to Italy (between 1644 and 1650) had a profound influence on his style, bringing him closer to Italian classicism and the Bamboccianti movement. Our painting Scène de port méditerranéen imaginaire animée de navires illustrates his interest in idealized, animated landscapes. It depicts a fictitious port with an antique feel, populated by characters in classical garb, evoking Antiquity or the Renaissance. The warm, golden light typical of his work highlights the liveliness of the port, where boats and human figures intermingle in a lively scene. The seated merchant woman selling her vegetables reinforces the authenticity of the scene. The contrast between her humble activity and the presence of horsemen and soldiers in the center of the picture reflects the social diversity of the scene, a key element of the Bambocciante style. This type of composition reflects the period's infatuation with Italy and its picturesque landscapes, while retaining a Flemish touch in the attention to detail and precision of the figures.
