French school circa 1800, after Hyacinthe - Lot 224
French school circa 1800, after Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659-1743 Paris) Portrait of Louis-Gaston Fleuriau d'Armenonville (1662- 1733), Bishop of Orléans Oil on canvas, oval format (lining) 71 x 59 cm . Presented in a stuccoed and gilded wood frame in the Louis XIV style. Louis XIV Interesting copy - the only one known - of the portrait painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud in 1706, now considered lost. Brother of the future Keeper of the Seals Joseph-Jean Baptiste Fleuriau d'Armenonville, painted by Rigaud in 1692, 1706 and 1709, Louis-Gaston was chosen bishop of Orléans on August 14, 1706, which his portrait no doubt commemorates. Prior to this, he had been canon of Chartres, treasurer of the Sainte-Chapelle (1687) and bishop of Aire-Sur-l'Adour (1698). In the church of Notre-Dame de Chauvigny-du-Perche (Loiret- Cher), there is a remarkable portrait of him "freeing slaves", citing one by Rigaud, possibly executed by Brother Jean André ("an excellent painter himself", according to Barthelemy Mercier de Saint-Leger (1734- 1799), head of the Sainte-Geneviève library).
