RARE PORTRAIT BOX Jean PETITOT, known as le vieux (Geneva 16 - Lot 211
RARE PORTRAIT BOX Jean PETITOT, known as le vieux (Geneva 1607 - Vevey 1691) Portrait of Louis XIV in armor, wearing the cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit, King of France. Oval miniature on enamel. 2.5 x 2.3 cm The miniature is presented under a curved, hinged glass. It is set in an openwork, poly-lobed gold enamel frame decorated with white and black flowers on a turquoise-blue "Bleu Mourant" background. The reverse formerly set with 101 diamonds, including a main one in the center and eight around the edges, each in a surround of rose-cut diamonds. The setting probably by Pierre or Laurent Le Tessier de Montarsy. Missing crown. Circa 1684 H. 4.9 cm - L. 4.4 cm Gross weight : 32,63 g This portrait box is part of a set of nearly 300 boxes listed in the registers des Présents du Roi, offered as diplomatic gifts during the reign of Louis XIV. However, only two comparable boxes complete with diamonds are known today: A box in the Musée du Louvre, from the collections of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collections. A box in Bologna, Muséo della Storia di Bologna, Palazzo Pepoli & Santuario di Santa Maria della Vita. A box in which the diamonds have been loosened is also in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. We also know of a double-portrait box with Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria (EVE sale, July 2, 2024). However, our box, even without its crown and diamonds, is remarkable from two points of view. Firstly, it is the only box known to open. Secondly, and more importantly, it is the richest model. While the others are set with diamonds around the portrait and the back is enamelled, here we have the opposite configuration, i.e. a back set entirely with large diamonds, testifying to the importance of the person for whom this box was intended.
