The Entombment
Oil on canvas 81.5 x 67 cm .
This "Entombment", whose composition is based on folio 28 of the Little Passion of Christ, engraved between 1509 and 1510 by Albrecht
Dürer, can be attributed to a follower of Grégoire Guérard. The stylistic similarity is particularly evident in the figures on the right-hand side of the composition, as well as Christ.
By way of comparison, let's mention the "Entombment" in the Musée des
Beaux-Arts de Dole (Jura) or the "Déploration" in the Basilique de Saint-Quentin (Aisne). As Frédéric
Elsig in his monograph on the master, Grégoire Guérard drew on Dürer's models throughout his career, particularly his Petite Passion. The acidic palette further supports the connection with his own work.
The composition was originally painted on canvas - a rarity for this period, when wooden supports were more frequently preserved - and has undergone a fairly recent lining. The original canvas is still visible, while traces of later enlargements can be seen at the top.
(minor accidents and missing parts).
