Crucifix with Christ in carved ivory; in a violin-shaped carved and gilded wood frame, decorated with shells and flowers; on a blackened wood cross and green velvet background. The Christ has his head raised, mouth half-open, wavy hair falling over his shoulders, body with detailed morphology and apparent venous network; perizonium held by a cord and knot with a drop on the right hip; parallel legs and feet resting on a supedanum. Mid 18th century Christ height: 52 cm - Total height: 122 cm - Length: 63 cm (Very slight damage) Provenance : According to a notice preserved on the back of this crucifix painting, this Christ was fixed in the oratory of Madame Louise, daughter of Louis XV at the Château de Marly. It was then given by Madame Royale to Abbé Antoine Pierre Gaston de Sambucy (1764-1850), former Master of Ceremonies at the Imperial Chapel, confessor to Charles X and, above all, a great supporter of the royal family during the French Revolution, particularly Madame Élisabeth, whom he accompanied to the scaffold. The royal family was extremely grateful to him. He was director of the chapel of Emperor Napoleon's chapel. He then became chaplain to the Count of Artois and vicar-general of Reims.
