Jérôme PREUDHOMME (1735 - 1810) - Lot 86
Jérôme PREUDHOMME (1735 - 1810) "The Adoration of the Magi Oil on paper mounted on cardboard 30.2 x 41.8 cm The life and work of Jerôme Preudhomme remain little studied. Accepted as a member of the Académie de Saint Luc in 1767, he became director of the Ecole Académique de Saint Quentin in 1784. He probably specialized in religious painting. We can mention three other known paintings by him, including Saint Benedict presenting the rules of his order to the Pope, a monumental canvas (254 x 102 cm) in the Musée des beaux-arts d'Orléans. The dexterity of the artist's hand is perfectly illustrated in this painting, dated 1780, which marks the artist's full maturity. Provenance:Acquired in the Simone del Duca estate sale at Coutau Begarie on November 19, 2004 at Drouot Richelieu under number 11.
