BABIGON SERVICE FOR THE TABLE OF EMPEROR NICOLAS I (1777-182 - Lot 173
BABIGON SERVICE FOR THE TABLE OF EMPEROR NICOLAS I (1777-1825). Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, Alexander III period. Hard porcelain dinner plate, the rim decorated with a large frieze of gilded ivy on a gray background framed by red and gold borders, the center decorated with a gilded openwork rosette. Age wear, minor restorations. Underglaze green markings: AIII (Alexander III), under imperial crown, dated (18)89. Diameter: 24 cm. History: This neo-classical service was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I for the Péterhof Palace. It was originally designed for 100 people and comprised 1,500 pieces, delivered between 1823 and 1824. An additional order was placed with the Imperial Porcelain Factory in 1840, for a service for 100 people. Thus, the number of these plates was doubled. One part was transferred to Tsarskoye-Selo, while the second part was destined in 1857 for the Belvedere Palace, built from 1852 to 1856 by André Stackenschneider, on Babigon Hill near Péterhof. It was during this period that the service took its name. Successive Tsars used it until the Russian Revolution, for banquets and official dinners. This led to the creation of restocking pieces such as this plate. Particularly fond of this service, Emperor Nicholas II regularly used it for his private residence at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye. Palace in Tsarskoe-Selo.
