VIDE-POCHE. - Lot 60
VIDE-POCHE. By Woerffel, St. Petersburg, late 19th century. Carved from a block of nephrite, decorated with the head of a frog emerging from water, its eyes set with glass pearls, preserved in its original shaped leather case with red velvet and champagne-colored silk interior, stamped in gold letters and Cyrillic characters: "K. Woerffel - Saint-Petersburg". Age wear, minor accidents, but overall good condition. H. 3 cm - L. 15.5 cm - W. 14 cm. History: Prussian-born Karl Feodorovitch Woerffel (1846-after 1918) founded his company in St. Petersburg in 1873, where he manufactured bronze objects and lapidaries. In 1895, he became "official supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia". At the time, Woerffel had large reserves of nephrite, which he traded in, as well as malachite. Until 1908, he produced most of Fabergé's works in hard stone, notably nephrite, and for the Emperor Alexander III Museum in St. Petersburg. He also maintained commercial relations with Germany, England and the United States, which offered his objects for sale. In 1912 (source: Fabergé, a comprehensive reference book, Slatkine, 1912), Fabergé acquired the Woerffel company. However, according to another source, this acquisition was made in 1914 or 1915.
