History: Bernstorf Castle was the summer residence of King Christian IX of Denmark. It was here that all the king's children liked to gather every season. The rose garden was a highly symbolic place for Princess Dagmar (future Empress Maria Feodorovna), where she first met Tsarevich Nicholas on October 1, 1864, and where he asked her to marry him. But fate decided otherwise, and he died a few months later. On his deathbed, the tsarevich asked his brother Alexander to marry Dagmar. The wedding took place and the couple were very happy. Provenance : Former collection of Prince Nicolas of Greece, then kept by direct descent.
