Superb needlepoint crinoline flounce, Belgium, late 19th/early 20th century. A long, wide, finely crafted needlepoint lace flounce in tight stitches, some of which are rarely used for Point de Gaze and are particularly finely executed, with a superb, elegant composition: an undulating river adorned with florets and intertwined with supple sprays of roses and foliage running to the upper edge of the flounce, and festooning the lower edge with oblong cartouches of foliage. Delicate vine tendrils with bunches of grapes or small bouquets of florets made with extremely fine spindles punctuate the décor with small touches. Cream cotton. Dim. 3.10 + 3.40 = 6.50 m x 27 cm (good condition, some very pale foxing or tiny restorations)
