Late 17th-century Cuzco school (Peru) Holy Trinity with Joseph and the Virgin Mary Oil on canvas with gold highlights and brocateado decoration 131 x 106 cm (some restorations) Provenance: Christie's Christie's New York, sale March 26-27, 2011, lot 123 Private collection, USA Chrstie's New York, sale June 9, 1982 "Latin american paintings" lot 10 Collection of Mr and Mrs Franck Kleinholz, Miami Beach, USA Exhibitions: Loewe Art Museum, University of Miami Coral Gables, USA, September 1972 - November 1972, illustrated on page 13 in the catalog by Pal Kelemen The Holy Trinity is depicted here in three identical profiles. Rejected by the Council of Trent, this representation was widely adopted in Latin America, where the ban was not enforced. It is of major interest, as the three figures resemble triads of gods venerated before the Spanish conquest. Below, on either side, appear the Virgin Mary on the right and Christ on the left. Other well-known compositions feature the Ark of the Covenant and Saint Rose of Lima.
