Late 17th-century Lima school (Peru) - Lot 276
Late 17th-century Lima school (Peru) Saint Francis receiving the stigmata, surrounded by angels Oil on canvas with gold highlights and brocateado decoration Lifts, wear and small chips 126 x 92 cm Provenance: Peyton Wright Gallery, Sante Fe (N.M), USA Exhibitions: Peyton Wright Gallery "18th Annual Art of the devotion" 2010 Musée Lambinet, Versailles, September 17 to December 24, 2011, page 101 of the catalog Faste et ferveur d'Amérique latine. Lyon, Andes Célestes, Musée d'art religieux de Fourvière, March 18 to June 30, 2017, page 85 of the catalog. Montbrison, Secret des couleurs de l'Europe aux Andes, Musée d'Allard, March 21 to September 27, 2015, page 21 of the exhibition catalog. The rich brocateado garments reveal the importance of the scene presented here. Saint Francis at prayer receives the stigmata of Christ, who appears here in the sky at the top right of the composition, in the form of a seraph. Supported by two angels, the emaciated face of St. Francis is struck by rays of light whose wounds can be seen on various parts of his body. As he receives the stigmata, the saint appears at peace, abandoning himself to God's will. The identification of the bird in the foreground remains uncertain, as species have often been reinterpreted. It could be a heron, evoking the destruction of corruption, a swan as a symbol of purity, or a pelican, emblematic of redemption and charity. Charity.
