Rectangular kettle in repoussé and chased silver. Set on fou - Lot 271
Rectangular kettle in repoussé and chased silver. Set on four zoomorphic feet, the body is decorated with foliage and lions. On the upper part, two cylindrical lids: one acting as a stopper for the container below, the other, openwork, for the heating chamber. Folding top handle. Peru, early 20th century H.: 28 cm - W.: 30 cm - D.: 14 cm - D.: 1,660 gr Unlike European or North American kettles, this Latin American kettle has a double chamber, one for the water and the other for the hot coals to keep the water hot. These kettles are known as "Pava hornillo" (kettle with internal brazier), and the support legs indicate that a flame under the kettle was not necessary. It was used to serve "Paraguay tea", known today as yerba mate. This drink originated in pre-Columbian times and is made from the dried leaves of the South American holly plant. Yerba mate was enjoyed in the salons and official meetings of the Spanish viceroyalty of Peru, a colonial administrative district.
