Late 17th-century Cuzco school (Peru) - Lot 270
Late 17th-century Cuzco school (Peru) The Flight into Egypt with a tropical forest animated by exotic animals The angel Gabriel and a harvest scene (message from God) Apocryphal Gospel Oil on canvas 131 x 100 cm Provenance: Christie's New York, sale May 26-27, 2010 antonio Roig Ferré Sacred Art Foundation San Juan, Puerto Rico, United States Exhibitions: Musée Lambinet, Versailles, September 17 to December 24, 2011, page 108 of the catalog Faste et ferveur d'Amérique latine. The theme of the flight into Egypt was widely appreciated by South American painters. This composition illustrates two passages from this episode: in the background, the wheat field where a peasant was working, who, according to Mary's recommendations, announced to Herod's soldiers that the Holy Family had passed through at sowing time. The foreground shows the Holy Family resting under a palm tree. According to the miracle, the tree bent down to let Joseph pick his dates. Our composition illustrates the tree, which, although upright, is placed in the center behind the Virgin, a clear echo of the miracle. It is interesting to note the absence of the brocateado and the desire to represent the Holy Family as a deeply human family: Mary, like all mothers, feeds her child.
