Lima school circa 1600-1700 - Lot 259
Lima school circa 1600-1700 Santa Rosa de Lima or the Habsburgs' defense of the faith Habsburgs Oil on canvas (restorations) 144.6 x 102.2 cm Provenance Valery Taylor Gallery, Denver, USA CRN Auction Cambridge, USA, Sale January 9, 2011, lot 34. Private collection Deep River, Connecticut, USA, Exhibition: Musée Lambinet, Versailles, September 17 to December 24, 2011, catalog Faste et ferveur d'Amérique latine. In the colonies and associated kingdoms, the Habsburg dynasty enforced Spain's commercial monopoly, incorporated into the Crown of Castile. The Church and the Catholic faith are magnified through exceptional large-scale paintings, of which this work is an example. The composition is divided into two horizontal parts, presenting the celestial and terrestrial parts, which come together through the figure of Santa Rosa de Lima erecting the monstrance.
