18th century school from Cuzco (Peru) - Lot 252
18th century school from Cuzco (Peru) An angel harquebusier and defender of the faith Oil on canvas 106 x 76 cm Provenance: Private collection, Edgar Samaniego: Private collection, Edgar Samaniego Exhibitions: Musée Lambinet, Versailles, September 17 to December 24, 2011, page 133.134.135 of the catalog Faste et ferveur d'Amérique latine. Lyon, musée d'art religieux de Fourvière, Andes celestes exhibition (2017), p.97-98 Auch, Musée des Amériques, Baroque des Andes (2014) This model of harquebusier angels was created by Luis de Riaño, a pupil of the famous Roman artist Angelino Medoro, who came to Peru. "The peoples of Peru knew neither steel nor firearms. The arrival of the Spaniards, with their swords and artillery, stunned them. The arquebus shots appeared to them as manifestations of the lightning bolt, venerated as a sacred celestial entity (manifestation of the thunder god Illapa)" (Carmen Bernand). At this time, the warrior archangels, dressed in sumptuous costumes embellished with gold, were particularly popular with Indian artists, especially in the region around present-day Cuzco, where they were created.
