The iconography of the garden of Mary and Saint Augustine in the same composition is rare. The right-hand side, depicting Mary in a garden, may well illustrate one of the visions of the saint shown on the left in his study. Bishop of Hippone (Bône) in North Africa, a great doctor of the Latin Church, Saint
Augustine was a scholar who studied rhetoric in Carthage and Rome, writing numerous doctrinal treatises. Specialists count numerous orders and congregations based on his writings that arrived in Peru as early as 1551, and which may also have commissioned this spectacular painting.
