Attributed to Juan Zapata Inga (Peru) active in the late 17t - Lot 222
Attributed to Juan Zapata Inga (Peru) active in the late 17th century Saint Augustine and Mary's Garden Oil on canvas (restorations) 114 x 154.7 cm Provenance Robert Simon Fine Art, New York, USA Private collection, Buenos Aire, Argentina Exhibitions: Musée Lambinet, Versailles, September 17 to December 24, 2011, catalog Faste et ferveur d'Amérique latine, p.91 Le Mans, Baroque des Andes, Musée de Tessé (2010/2011) Castres, Andean Baroque, Musée Goya (2011) Sarrebourg, Andean Baroque, Musée du Pays de Sarrebourg (2011) Montbrison, Musée d'Allard, Secret des couleurs de l'Europe aux Andes (2015), page 35 La Rochelle, Musée du Nouveau Monde, "De l'or, des anges et des roses" exhibition (2015.) Lyon, musée d'art religieux de Fourvière, Andes celestes exhibition (2017), p.76-77 The iconography of the garden of Mary and Saint Augustine in the same composition is rare. The right-hand side, depicting Mary in a garden, may well illustrate one of the visions of the saint shown on the left in his study. Bishop of Hippone (Bône) in North Africa, a great doctor of the Latin Church, Saint Augustine was a scholar who studied rhetoric in Carthage and Rome, writing numerous doctrinal treatises. Specialists count numerous orders and congregations based on his writings that arrived in Peru as early as 1551, and which may also have commissioned this spectacular painting.
