Rare oblong boxwood hunting cup carved in bas-relief with th - Lot 130
Rare oblong boxwood hunting cup carved in bas-relief with the two shields of France and Brittany, a heart and the monogram of Christ. The handle is formed by the body of a snake, the end is decorated with a flowering vase; inscription on the rim FAIT PAR IV: MARCHAIS. Loire Atlantique late 17th century L.: 13 cm - Wg.: 7.5 cm - H.: 5 cm A search for the surname of Yves Marchais, who is said to have carved this cup, provides a clue. First of all, it's a name that's well established in western France, in Maine-et-Loire and Loire- Atlantique. The presence of the Brittany shield leads us to suppose that this could be a certain Yves Marchais, born on December 9, 1641 in Petit-Mars and dying after May 16, 1698.
