Wrought-iron, chased and engraved altarpiece featuring five - Lot 110
Wrought-iron, chased and engraved altarpiece featuring five arches with pinnacles and openwork twisted columns. In the center, the Virgin sits on a throne, carrying her Child on her lap. She is flanked by two adoring angels and two apostles (St. Peter and St. Paul?) holding an open book, one facing outwards and the other facing in. Console with cherub head. Reverse engraved with architectural figures, lattice work and a coat of arms with cross amidst foliage. Northern Italy or Pays-alémaniques, 17th century H.: 72 cm - W.: 64.5 cm (oxidation, slight missing parts) This exceptional altarpiece raises many questions. It may well be the result of a craftsman's masterpiece, as this type of production appears to be unique. If we examine the quality of the chasing, the suppleness and homogeneity of the decoration, and the rendering of the drapery moire, we find ourselves in the presence of an artist who has perfectly mastered the skills of his art. What's more, the text on the open book held by St. Peter is probably written in Latin, suggesting a work produced for the Latin, not the Greek, world.
