Very large walnut panel carved in high relief with the Bapti - Lot 80
Very large walnut panel carved in high relief with the Baptism of Christ. Standing on the banks of the Jordan, St. John the Baptist pours the baptismal water over Christ's head. Christ's head, angels on the other bank carry Jesus' garments The dove of the Holy Spirit emerges from the clouds at the top. Richly decorated background of a village with bell towers, fish-scale roofs and flocks of birds. Southern Germany, late 16th century H.: 89.5 cm - W.: 57.3 cm in a frame (slight worming) The frontal position of Christ in the middle of the waters of the Jordan River, at the center of the picture, is typically inspired by 15th-century Italian representations. The same composition can be found on the bronze doors of the St. John the Baptist baptistery in Florence, in the fifth panel created by Lorenzo Guiberti between 1403 and 1425 (Fig.). The abundance of details in the landscape, particularly the fish-scale roofs, means that this panel is more likely to be found in southern Germany, a region in constant dialogue with northern Italy, which provided artistic models for the depiction of scenes, particularly religious ones.
