Medallion with bronze profile of Henri II, on a flowery alab - Lot 63
Medallion with bronze profile of Henri II, on a flowery alabaster background and in a bronze hoop with bélière. Circa 1600, after a medal by Etienne Delaune and Luca Penni (1500 - 1556). H.: 43 cm - W.: 35 cm (later frame) The Medal of the Glory of the King, engraved in 1552 by Etienne Delaune (1518 - 1583) and preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, (inv MedFr26) (fig) seems to have been the source of inspiration for this medallion. The reverse of this medal features a depiction of the chariot of Renommée, engraved by Etienne Delaune, inspired by a drawing kept at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and attributed to Luca Penni (1500 - 1556). Authorship of the king's profile does not seem to be entirely attributed to Delaune, and the Italian artist may have participated in its production. Book consulted: J.
