A pastiglia box. Poplar core covered with applied white past - Lot 40
A pastiglia box. Poplar core covered with applied white paste figures on a gilded and hallmarked background. The two main fronts are decorated with figures in a boat carrying branches, and the sides with a representation of Virtue discovered by Vices. The corners are adorned with pilasters decorated with candelabras. Lid with a knob forming a grip, scrolls and a drop of piastres. Northern Italy, Ferrara, circa 1500 - 1520 H.: 10.5 cm - W.: 15.5 cm - D.: 10.5 cm (accidents and visible missing parts) This box appears to come from a workshop identified in Ferrara as the Morality and Love workshop. The theme of the discovery of Virtue by Vices is used only by this workshop. However, the significance of this naval feast does not seem to have made much sense among art historians, who do not know from which reference the workshop drew this representation. Similar caskets are preserved today, notably in a private collection in Turin from the former Zecchi collection in Florence. collection in Florence. Book consulted: L. Martini, L. Foi, Cofanetti in pastiglia del rinascimento italiano, Brixiantiquaria, Brescia, November 19-27, 2005, p 112
