Virgin Mary and Saint John of Calvary in carved, polychromed - Lot 39
Virgin Mary and Saint John of Calvary in carved, polychromed and gilded wood. Standing with hands clasped, Mary wears a wimple and a mantle-forming veil, the sides of which are tucked under one arm. Saint John raises his head, his right hand against his face, his abundant hair flowing with wavy strands, his cloak resting on one shoulder and a flap pulled up over the same shoulder. Both figures have a radiant halo behind their heads. Tyrol, circa 1500 Height: 61 cm (restorations, including polychromy) This ensemble, which probably comes from a Glory beam, can be compared with a sculpture of Saint Sebastian in the Louvre (inv n° RF 4752) (fig a). In fact, the same hair features are found on the Saint John and this Saint Sébastien, with a full head of hair, wavy locks and snail-like curls (fig b).
