Small wedding cassone in carved, polychromed and gilded wood - Lot 26
Small wedding cassone in carved, polychromed and gilded wood, with grossetto front decorated with falcon hunting. On the back, the coats of arms of Philibert II de Savoie dit le beau (1480-1504) and Yolande-Louise de Savoie (1487-1499) on the occasion of their union on May 12, 1496. Northern Italy, late 15th century, 1496 H.: 26 cm - W.: 38.3 cm - D.: 21.7 cm (restorations, including polychromatic corrections) Provenance: former Bordeaux collection. This box bears the alliance shields of Philibert II of Savoy's first marriage II de Savoie with his cousin Yolande-Louise de Savoie, celebrated on May 12, 1496. The young bride, aged 9 at the time of her marriage, died on September 12, 1499. Philibert remarried Marguerite of Austria in November 1501. He in turn died in 1504 and is buried in the church at Brou (Ain). The cassone is a piece of medieval furniture. It is often commissioned by the groom so that the bride can store her belongings; it is placed in the bedroom. The front is decorated with biblical, mythological or courtly scenes. In this case, a falcon hunt has been depicted.
