Virgin and Child in terracotta and polychrome. Seated and ca - Lot 25
Virgin and Child in terracotta and polychrome. Seated and carrying the sleeping Child on her lap, Mary is treading on a snake holding a fruit in its mouth. Northern Italy, late 16th century Height: 43 cm (minor accidents) There is an extraordinary tension between the violence of evil represented by this snake dominated by the Virgin and the tranquility of this Child sleeping soundly and confidently. This model is more strongly inspired by a Madonna and Child in the Louvre by Luca della Robia (inv RF 587) (fig) dating from the second quarter of the 15th century, whose sleeping Child displays the same sense of abandonment.
