Coronation of the Virgin Mary, carved in high-relief walnut, - Lot 19
Coronation of the Virgin Mary, carved in high-relief walnut, part of an altarpiece. Mary, seated at the right of God the Father, hands clasped, wears a crown resting on long, wavy locks of hair that fall to her shoulders. She is dressed in a gown and an ample mantle, one side of which is folded back over the front to form highly architectural pleats. God the Father holds up his right hand in a gesture of blessing, and is wearing a three-crowned tiara, the bale of which falls to the front of his shoulders; a flap of his cope falls to his knees, a globe to his feet. Southern Netherlands, circa 1480 H.: 36.5 cm - W.: 40 cm (minor restorations)
