Rare oak sideboard with backsplash opening to two leaves and - Lot 17
Rare oak sideboard with backsplash opening to two leaves and a drawer, openwork wrought-iron hinges, top with live-jointed boards, small backsplash with stylized fleuron ornamentation, base with spacer board; sides adorned with embrevé panels with parchment folds. Northern France, Abbeville region, circa 1460-1470 H.: 180 cm - W.: 90 cm - D.: 60 cm (wormholes and minor restorations) This rare sideboard can be compared with a small oak chest from the Litybur collection (fig. a). Indeed, the design of the parchment folds is absolutely identical to that of the sideboard shown here, notably in the firmness of the brace. The surrounding molding also follows the same shape, with softer angles. In addition, the church of Saint-Martin in Cambron (Somme) still contains 15th-century stalls (fig. b) whose parchment-pleated decoration is very similar to these prominent, nervous pleats. This suggests that this rare piece of furniture originated in the Abbeville region. Book consulted: M. Burckhardt, Mobilier Moyen-Age Renaissance, Massin, Paris, p 17 P.
