Virgin and Child in carved wood with polychrome and gilded a - Lot 9
Virgin and Child in carved wood with polychrome and gilded appliqué. Seated on a throne bench, Mary holds her Son seated on her right side. She is dressed in a gown and wearing a veil forming a mantle, held in place by a diamond-shaped pectoral clasp. One flap is pulled back over her knees, forming tiered beak-like folds. Italy, Tuscany, late 14th / early 15th century H.: 70.5 cm collector's label (some worming and missing gilding) This beautiful Madonna and Child still has Gothic features, but is marked by the transition to Renaissance styles that were emerging in Italy in the second half of the 14th century. The face possesses the particular softness that Renaissance humanism brought to sculpture, while the folds of the garments still obey the aestheticism of international Gothic.
