The Aurige of Delphi - Lot 614
The Aurige of Delphi Proof in plaster with an imitation bronze patina. Musée du Louvre casting workshop. H.: 210 cm - D.: 50 x 40 cm (small pieces glued back at the back of the drapery) Based on the bronze antique, produced around the 5th century B.C. and kept at the Musée des Antiquités in Delphi. The Aurige is said to have been made for Polyzalos de Deinomenides, tyrant of Gela, to celebrate his victory in the chariot race at the Pythian Games. It is one of the most famous statues of classical Greece.
