Hermes of Olympia or Hermes of Praxiteles bust - Lot 543
Hermes of Olympia or Hermes of Praxiteles bust Belgian black marble, gold patina on the hair. White molded marble pedestal H.: 77 cm - W.: 58 cm Germany late 19th century (Small chips, one glued back on the pedestal) Based on the monumental Greek marble of Hermes carrying Dionysus discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the temple of Hera in Olympia and preserved in the Olympia Archaeological Museum. This marble is traditionally associated with Praxiteles (4th century BC). Our bust, of the highest quality, is on the 1:1 scale of ancient marble. When it was first discovered, the hair showed faint traces of cinnabar, probably a preparation for gilding. The excavations were financed and carried out by Germany under the direction of Ernst Curtius. A plaster edition was produced in Berlin by Gebrüder Micheli (the brothers Claudio and Aurelio Micheli, both Italian sculptors, founded a casting and reproduction workshop in 1824, which was very well known at the time).
