Victor Jean NICOLLE (1754-1826) - Lot 541
Victor Jean NICOLLE (1754-1826) Monuments of Paris under the Directoire Watercolor after a painting by Hubert Robert "Les monuments de Paris" in the Musée des Beaux- Arts de Montréal. 40 x 65 cm Victor-Jean Nicolle was a French painter of the second half of the first quarter of the 19th century. In keeping with the taste of his time and in the image of famous artists such as Hubert Robert, Nicolle revealed his talent for landscape compositions early on, specializing in representations of capriccio, classical and imaginary landscapes of ruined architecture. Initially fascinated by Rome, he made several trips there, depicting the city's ancient ruins. In between his travels, Nicolle recorded the history and topography of Paris, producing several views of the city, like our watercolor. This watercolor is perfectly in keeping with Victor-Jean Nicolle's work. Jean Nicolle's work: based on a painting by Hubert robert, the 18th-century French master of capriccio, it shows Paris's emblematic monuments scattered among ancient ruins.
