Oil on canvas signed lower right "Schneider". 73 x 92 cm Provenance: Former - Former Geneviève McM. collection, USA - Private collection, Paris The certificate of authenticity will be given to the buyer. Born in Switzerland, Gérard Schneider was a key figure in the new, free, gestural abstraction that emerged in Paris in the immediate post-war period. In the mid-1930s, Gérard Schneider incorporated the revolution initiated by Kandinsky's abstraction into his work, while exploring the surrealist and cubist horizons inspired by African art. Then, in the immediate post-war period, his painting played a pioneering role in the birth of a new, radical abstraction: Abstraction lyrique. Alongside Georges Mathieu, Hans Hartung and Pierre, Gérard Schneider's work acquired an international dimension. From the mid-1940s onwards, major exhibitions featuring the main members of Abstraction Lyrique were organized in Paris and the rest of the world.
