Early 18th century school after Antique Venus Medici or Modest Venus Bronze sculpture with dark brown patina H. 56 cm (with base) Provenance: Former collection of Monsieur Erik Le Caruyer De Beauvais The precise date and location of the antique marble's discovery are not documented. It is mentioned as early as 1559, when Willem van Tétrode made the first known bronze reduction of this model for Philip II of Spain. In 1638, François Perrier devoted three plates to the Venus in a collection of one hundred etching plates illustrating the finest Roman statues. In 1677, the marble was transferred from Rome to Florence, and by 1688, it was part of the Tribunes des Uffizi Tribunes of the Uffizi, where it remains to this day. The subject enjoyed great success in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in France. France. Around 1630, Hubert Le Sueur produced a life-size bronze copy for Cardinal de Richelieu. Louis XIV's collections included no fewer than five copies of the antique model by Martin Carlier, Jean-Jacques Clérion and Antoine Coysevox, Nicolas Frémery and Balthasar Keller for the bronze version.
