Pair of patinated and gilded bronze two-armed sconces with b - Lot 506
Pair of patinated and gilded bronze two-armed sconces with barrel, the shaft in the shape of a couleuvrine decorated with the arms of France and D. FOIRE, the arms adorned with oak leaves. H.: 43 cm - W.: 26 cm Louis XVI style, 20th century Our pair of sconces is similar to the very famous model that belonged to the Count d'Artois for his bedroom in his Bagatelle folly. A watercolor by François-Joseph Bélanger (1744- 1818), the prince's first architect, allows us to find them on his decor project (fig.1). Other known examples include one from the Georges Geoffroy Collection, sold in Paris on December 2, 1971, lot 82, then from the Fondation Bemberg, Toulouse, and one from the Lagarfeld Collection, sold at Christie's in Monaco on April 24, 2000, lot 284. In both pairs, the arms of light are formed of grained laurel leaves, the barrel enhanced with draperies and artillery balls supported by chains, reminiscent of the composition of a drawing by Jean-Louis Prieur, circa 1770, kept at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Finally, an exceptional pair was recently sold, from the Collection Dillée Collection, at Sotheby's in Paris, on March 18, 2015, lot 129.
