(Restorations; some bronzes added; possible modifications)
Doirat is known as one of the few cabinetmakers of the
Regency period to have punctually stamped his pieces, given that stamping was only made compulsory by the Parisian guild of cabinetmakers in 1751 (J.-D. Augarde, Etienne Doirat,
Ebony Carpenter, J. Paul Getty Museum Journal, Vol. XIII, 1985, pp. 33-52). Doirat had several successive installations in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district. His success is attested both by his daughter's rich dowry - in 1720 - and by the presence of eleven workbenches in his studio. On the subject of form, Doirat was particularly fond of models that today would be described as somewhat archaic. The inventory drawn up after his death in 1732 and published by J.-D. Augarde in 1985 reveals that Doirat retained exclusive control over his gilded bronze mounts, keeping not only the master models but also unused and finished examples. It is therefore possible to attribute certain pieces on the basis of the mounts alone (op. cit.).
