Two flat desks in Boulle marquetry of gilded brass on a tort - Lot 440
Two flat desks in Boulle marquetry of gilded brass on a tortoiseshell background. One opens on the front with five drawers, one of which is wide at the waist, while the other opens with four drawers and a central leaf. They stand on four curved legs. The top and sides are decorated with arabesques, grotesques and stylized foliage in the Bérain style. The first features a dancing couple, monkeys, fantastical animals and espagnolettes. The other features a tea ceremony scene with ottomans, Chinese, turqueries, putti and antics. Chased and gilded bronze ornaments such as moldings, framing rods and sabots. Regency period H.: 77.8 cm - W.: 108.5 cm - D.: 44 cm; H.: 78 cm - W.: 99.2 cm - D. 46.5 cm (Damage, missing parts and restorations) Most of these desks are attributed to Bernard Ier Van Risen Burgh (1700-1760). A somewhat similar desk with a central leaf, from the former John Jones collection, entered the V&A collections in 1882 (n°1014-1082). We also find a similar model in the former Mentmore Collection sold at Sothebys Parke Bernet & Co. Co under lot 125 on Wednesday May 18, 1977. Finally, we can mention the Hôtel Lambert, a princely collection, Vol III, sold under number 425 on October 13, 2022 at Sotheby's in Paris. For a model with a central drawer, see the flat desk auctioned at Tajan in Paris on April 19, 2018, lot 220.
