Jan MYTENS (1614-1670) - Lot 435
Jan MYTENS (1614-1670) Presumed portrait of Queen Henrietta Mary of England and her lady-in-waiting Oil on canvas (lining) Signed on the balcony, center left 135 x 151 cm Signed on the balcony, center left Mÿtens F Wear and restoration Praised for the quality of his brushwork, influenced by the influential Antoine van Dyck, from whom he took many of his subjects, Jan Mytens produced spectacular portraits of royal and aristocratic families, whose social position was underlined by a remarkable use of fabrics and finery. A comparable composition, said to be by Jan Mytens, was offered for sale in Austria in 2020. The version presented here is a much more accomplished version. The dexterity with which the silk details are rendered leaves no doubt as to its fully autographed nature. In particular, the left-hand section of the work, which does not exist in the Austrian version, opens the composition onto a harbor; a heavy curtain falling behind the figures on the right reveals the foot of the dolphin-decorated furniture.
