History: Wolfgang von Dalberg (1538-1601) was a prominent member of the German nobility and Prince-Elector-Archbishop of Mainz from 1582 to 1601. This period was marked by the religious tensions arising from the Protestant Reformation and the beginnings of the Counter-Reformation. Pope Clement VIII (1536-1605) corresponded with Wolfgang von Dalberg, urging him to protect the Catholic religion against the progress of the Reformation in German territories.
