Recognizable by its two-story columns, the Théâtre des Variétés was built by Cellerier in 1807. To the left of the Theatre, Canella describes the two rotundas of the panoramas before their destruction in 1831. With a diameter of 17 meters, they rose to a height of seven meters and were built in 1799. These two rotundas were the first in Paris to feature very large circular paintings, known as
Panoramas. A source of entertainment and instruction, these panoramas were so successful that other rotundas were built in Paris. Our painting depicts Parisian life on the Grand Boulevards in the late 1820s. Flower sellers, hawkers, elegant ladies, men in top hats and horse-drawn carriages crowd the boulevard Montmartre. Canella produced two or three versions of the panoramas with the Théâtre des variétés.
