JUNG Théodore (1803-1865). - Lot 428
JUNG Théodore (1803-1865). Portrait of Hussein Dey (1764-1838), last Dey of Algiers at the Paris Opera, 1831. Watercolor heightened with gold and silver on paper, preserved under glass in a modern carved and gilded wood frame. Good condition, minor damage to frame. Sight: H.: 15 cm - W.: 10.5 cm. Frame: H.: 32 cm - W.: 26 cm. History: In exile in Livorno after the capture of Algiers, the dey visited Paris in 1831 with only two Turks and three Europeans in his retinue. His visit to the opera caused quite a stir. The painter François-Gabriel Lepaulle took advantage of the opportunity to sketch his image, but was unwillingly noticed by his model, who, furious at the situation, being opposed to representations of the human figure, hid in the back of his dressing room (H. Klein, "Le Dey Hussein à Paris", in. Feuillets d'El-Djezaïr, 1913, pp. 126-127). Unpublished, our drawing was produced on the same occasion, but more discreetly, by Théodore Jung, future painter to the War Office, specializing in scenes of battles and the conquest of Algeria.
