IMPORTANT FRAGMENT from the tapestry embroidered by Queen Ma - Lot 349
IMPORTANT FRAGMENT from the tapestry embroidered by Queen Marie-Antoinette and her sister-in-law, Madame Elisabeth, during their captivity in the Temple prison. Decorated with multicolored polka dots on a black background, edged with pink stripes. The tapestry was made from scraps of wool the queen had on hand. On the back is an embroidered label bearing the handwritten inscription "Tapis fait au Temple par la Reine Marie-Antoinette et Madame Élisabeth, soeur de Louis XVI". H. 39 cm - L. 80 cm. Provenance: originally measuring two meters and eighty centimeters, this piece was a gift from the Duchesse d'Angoulême, née Madame Royale, daughter of Queen Marie-Antoinette, to Baron Théodore Charlet (1785-1859), the Duchesse's Secretary of Command and Treasurer General. The baron's great-granddaughter, Madeleine Aubourg de Boury (1882-1954), had four pieces cut out so that each of her children could keep a sample, a moving testimony to the work done by the queen and the sister of King Louis XVI during their captivity in the Temple prison. Reference: another piece of embroidery made by Queen Marie-Antoinette, decorated with roses, can be found at the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Louis-du-Temple at Vauhallan in the Essonne department.
