Mahogany and mahogany veneer armchair, curved openwork back - Lot 398
Mahogany and mahogany veneer armchair, curved openwork back decorated with beams. Curved armrests in line with the uprights, decorated with stylized palmettes. Connecting pieces carved with flowers. Tapered front legs, saber-shaped back legs. Consulate period. Stamped G. Jacob H. 87 cm - W. 49 cm - D. 57 cm This armchair is comparable to a model designed by Charles Percier and Pierre-François Léonard Fontaine, which sold at Christie's New York on July 1, 2021 (Lot 250). Percier and Fontaine were Napoleon Bonaparte's architects and decorators, designing and decorating the imperial residences. Percier and Fontaine's style was adopted by the famous cabinetmaker François-Honoré-Georges Jacob (1770-1841), known as Jacob-Desmalter, who worked alongside his brother Georges II (1768-1803). They were the sons of Georges Jacob (1739-1814), who worked for the aristocracy and royalty during the reign of Louis XVI. In 1796, he left the business to his sons, and the Jacob Frères company was created.
