Saint Petersburg Imperial Manufactory Pair of porcelain vases of baluster form with two high scrolled handles, polychrome decoration on one of a portrait of Miss Rosamond Croker after Sir Thomas Lawrence and on the other of a woman wearing a hat in front of a balustrade after Henri de Caisne in two cartouches on a blue background decorated with arcades, rosettes, palmettes and foliage in gold, green, purple and white in the Gothic style, the shoulder, base and foot of the vase with gold background decorated in relief with acanthus leaves and water leaves. Marked on the necks, N I, one dated 1831. Period of Nicolas 1er, circa 1831. H. 60 cm. Damage to handles The Imperial Porcelain Manufactory was founded in St. Petersburg in 1744 by Empress Elisabeth. The prestige of the Imperial Manufactory was due in particular to the production of luxurious dinner services commissioned by Empress Catherine II for her personal use. During the reign of Nicholas I, the porcelain of the Manufactory was distinguished by the quality of the paintings and portraits reproduced on vases such as the pair presented here.
