A pair of fixed glass plates depicting a balloon flight over the Champs-Elysées and a crossing of the English Channel. One annotated Mme Blanchard aux Champs Elisées 1797, the second annotated J.P. Blanchard between Calais and Boulogne on January 7, 1785. Late 18th century. Wood and gilded stucco frames. H. 18 cm ; W. : 13.5 cm and H. : 13.2 cm ; W. : 18.2 cm This pair of fixtures under glass depicts the adventures of Jean-Pierre Blanchard, the famous French aeronaut who became famous for his conquest of the air in a balloon. He was responsible for the first balloon crossing of the English Channel on January 7, 1785.
