Moulded and carved mahogany and mahogany veneer bookcase sta - Lot 337
Moulded and carved mahogany and mahogany veneer bookcase staircase with six steps topped by a revolving banister with foliate handholds forming a balustrade and resting on fifteen ringed columns. Two lion paw feet at the front and palmettes at the back. The whole supported by two iron rods and three balusters on a plinth base with central crosspiece resting on small castors. Directoire period, stamped on the back crosspiece G. IACOB and JME. H. 196 cm - W. 103 cm - D. 52 cm (minor accidents and restorations) Georges Jacob (1739-1814), a major cabinetmaker of the 18th century, first produced Louis XVI-style salon furniture, and was then supplier to the royal family. Strongly affected by the Revolution and losing most of his clients, Georges Jacob abandoned the Louis XVI style in favor of antiques and Anglomania, imagining new forms and using mahogany as a precursor to the Empire style. This extensive use of mahogany can be seen in the furniture he supplied for the painter David, as well as in the commission he carried out with Percier and Fontaine for the Convention Hall.
