Plate with mythological decoration painted in famille rose e - Lot 213
Plate with mythological decoration painted in famille rose enamels China Yongzheng period (1723-1735) Diameter : 22.5 cm Representing Apollo playing with his lyre, seated next to a young woman on a rock in front of trees, his wing decorated with peonies. The scene depicts Apollo, clearly identifiable by his lyre, with which he won numerous musical competitions against mortals. Apollo is known for his many love affairs, but the young woman depicted is not clearly identifiable. At the exhibition The China Trade (Royal pavilion, Brighton, 1986, no. 122), it was suggested that she might be Daphne. An identical plate, from the Ionides collection, is in the collections of the British Museum (1963,0422.22). Another plate is in the collections of the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg (illustrated by Scheurleer in Chine de Commande, 1966, pl. 224). Bibliography: Hervouêt, La porcelaine des Compagnie des Indes à décor occidental, 1986, p. 307, fig. 13.62 (classified Rs, extremely rare). Restorations
