Pair of chased and patinated bronze groups featuring a camel - Lot 169
Pair of chased and patinated bronze groups featuring a camel and a dromedary. They are shown standing, au naturel, their coats finely chased and detailed. They stand on a gilded bronze base with a gadrooned edge, a black granite counter-socle and flattened ball feet. H. 31.5 cm and 26.5 cm - W. 32 cm - D. 12 cm. France late 18th - early 19th century At the end of the 18th century, there was a craze for exotic figures from the Orient, as seen in Marie Antoinette's Cabinet Turc in Fontainebleau, for which Pierre Gouthière supplied a pair of camel-drawn andirons (preserved in the Musée du Louvre OA 52601), or the camel clock for the Boudoir Turc du comte d'Artois in Versailles ( B366). This type of subject continued to be in vogue under the First Empire, with the Pendule au Dromadaire attributed to Jean André Reich (1752-1817) (Musée François Duesberg, Mons, Belgium). Model reproduced on page 239 in "Die franzosische bronzenhr" by Elke Niehuser.
