Important pair of bronze andirons representing Jupiter and J - Lot 100
Important pair of bronze andirons representing Jupiter and Juno; base with putto head surrounded by two cherubs and a large garland of flowers, the base is formed by two leaning dolphins with raised tails; the upper register is composed of a perfume burner vase with dolphin base and cherub head. Italy, late 19th century Height: 81 cm (Wear and tear) This model can be compared with the creations of Tiziano Aspetti (1557-1606), a pupil of Girolamo Campagna and an Italian sculptor active in Venice. Aspetti produced a number of mythological subjects in bronze, some richly mounted as andirons, several examples of which can be seen in the public collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum, the Getty Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Musée du Louvre. Two sculptures of Jupiter and Juno after Tiziano Aspetti and similar to ours were sold at Sotheby's Paris on March 31, 2017 (Lot 10).
